Monsoon Wedding

Thought this movie was awesome.

It was a good way of showcasing the Indian wedding festivities in a way that it was authentic to desi crowds but the movie had a strong appeal to non-desis as well.. standard for Mira Nair.

Notable points:
  • Dubey was a hilarious character with his little one liners
  • Their little woods-based wedding was so cute
  • LMAO at this dude eating flowers all the time
  • SMH at the kissing/sexual scenes in this
  • I was ready to vomit when the woman is moaning and saying all kinds of shit in Hindi in the TV studio while I saw this movie with my PARENTS *ugh, gross*
  • The Indian Uncle child molester scenes made me look at uncles differently. For whatever reason I imagined this rarely happened in our communities.
    • Looking back, the wife's defense of the husband also made me think about how different people feed into what I will call (inappropriately in an undeserved broad, sweeping generalization kind of way) the rape culture of India. I recently saw the episode of Bigg Boss Season 7 where Armaan basically tells the Swedish desi girl that when people yell at him either he kisses them or tears off their clothes. That was like... the rapiest shit I've ever heard from a desi guy, especially on TV. Then... indignantly he calls the girl stupid when she's crying and another girl (Pritushya?) tells her that she was in the wrong for saying she would slap Armaan. No wonder our capital is also the rape capital of India and is the subject of news articles worldwide :(
Anyways.
Check out this oldie (lol) but goodie.
