Picture it.
Your parents are both Indians who immigrated to the United States from India where they were born and raised. You were inculcated with traditional values of your motherland's culture and the religion of which you are a member. You come across an Indian expatriate and as soon as he hears that you sound like a "typical American", what's the first thing they might say?
Let's just cover the 'confused' part of American-Born Confused Desi.
Yes, as someone who [mostly or completely] spent their lives here in US, I have come across many of my peers who don't know shit about India. Who don't care about their families. Who think the food smells disgusting. Who hate spices. Who think the movies are garbage and follow the standard formula. Who think the music is all raagas. Who think the women have no rights and men are all losers. Who think there is nothing cool or fun about the culture.
IS THAT PERSON ME? Fuck no.
BUT... you have the audacity to accuse me of abandoning my family values, my cultural values, my cultural identity all because you see how I dress and how I talk.
Thanks for that.
Then it should also be no wonder that there is ridiculous tension between Indians from the US and Indians from India. Dont believe me? Find any large IT department for a US company. You'll see it in 3 out 4 instances.
It's okay. I still love my brown people.. whether or not they love me back. Yaar.

ABCD!Let's not even start covering the fact that you may have been born in any number of countries. Let's not even get into the fact that they may shortly afterwards tell you that you are not even desi - for all intents and purposes you are American. Let's not even cover the fact that they have been dying to come to the United States for years and have decided, upon receiving their first paycheck, that they too will live here indefinitely.
